He holds a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from KTH with studies in Bioinformatics and Biotechnology at the University of Sydney, and completed his doctoral degree in 2008 at KTH with a thesis on bioinformatical and combinatorial methods for the generation and characterization of monospecific antibodies.<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p><em>Today, his research group works at the intersection of synthetic and systems biology, with a particular focus on protein and cell line engineering for novel curative gene therapies and their scalable bioproduction, including AAV-based vectors, protein vaccine, bispecific therapeutics for cancer and autoimmune diseases.\u00a0<\/em><\/p><p><em>Routed in protein engineering and synthetic biology his lab leverage engineering of both the drug candidate, using in-house combinatorial libraries, deep sequencing and screening platforms, as well as mammalian cell lines for their production using directed and evolutionary methods.<\/em><\/p><p><em>Rockberg is Director of GeneNova, a Vinnova-funded innovation milieu in precision health with a budget of 114 MSEK, and is PI in several major national centers including CellNova and AdBIOPRO focused on advanced continuous manufacturing.\u00a0<\/em><\/p><p><em>He is co-founder of 7 spinn-out companies \u2014 Atlas Antibodies, Atlas Therapeutics, Abclon Inc. (Seoul), Labrock AB, StrikePharma AB, Auweai AB and AareBio AB\u2014 spanning antibody reagents, cancer immunotherapy, CAR-T gene therapy and Precision Patient Segmentation through machine learning.\u00a0<\/em><\/p><p><em>He is a co-founder of the Korean company Abclon, listed on the KOSDAQ exchange, currently developing CAR-T and antibody therapies, including an antibody combination in global Phase 3 trials for gastric and breast cancer.<\/em><\/p><p><em>He is an elected member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences and recipient of the 2024 Biotech Builders Award and the 2021 SwedenBIO Life Science Star Award. With over 26,000 citations and publications in journals including Science, Nature Methods, Nature Communications and PNAS, Rockberg represents a combination of scientific depth, institutional sustainability in monoclonal antibody (mAb) manufacturing. Yet processes optimized solely for process development (PD) success may not always translate into robust, transferable GMP processes.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Industry survey data across PD, clinical, and commercial stages reveal that current capture cycle times consistently exceed ideal targets by 20\u201330%, while upstream titers continue to climb placing growing pressure on the downstream capture step. This presentation examines how PD, MSAT, and Manufacturing stakeholders can align on shared objectives such as speed, predictability, process robustness, and operational simplicity when intensifying protein A chromatography. Here we discuss when and how to apply intensification strategies across the development lifecycle.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p><p><em><strong>Henrik Ihre<\/strong> has been appointed Distinguished Fellow in 2025 at Cytiva and has a with a specific knowledge and background in the Downstream purification of biopharmaceuticals since 26 years back in time.<\/em><\/p><p><em>Henrik joined legacy Amersham Pharmacia Biotech in August 2000, following its acquisition by GE Healthcare in 2004. His career has been devoted to the design and development of several purification products enabling the manufacturing of life changing drugs on the market.\u00a0 Henrik started as a Senior Scientist in the R&amp;D chromatography resin department and later transferred into the role of Product Manager for several key products such as the Protein A portfolio. For more than ten year he headed and expanded the custom consumables organization. During his time in the custom consumable\u2019s organization more than 30 key products where brought to the market which now are a part of the Cytiva downstream offering.<\/em><\/p><p><em>His journey started in Sweden with a Ph.D. in synthetic organic polymer chemistry from the Royal Academy of Engineering (KTH) in 1998. After his graduate studies he spent two years as a Post Doc graduate at UC Berkeley in California, USA working on improved drug delivery systems of cytotoxins before he moved back to Sweden in 2000 joining legacy Amersham Pharmacia Biotech. virus (AAV) is widely used in cell and gene therapy, yet clinical translation remains challenging, with approximately 90% of trials failing, largely due to suboptimal vector design that compromises efficacy, safety, and manufacturability. Here, we highlight the power of a rational vector design approach, where all components of the transfer vector are carefully considered to facilitate a seamless transition from early research stages to the clinic. Firstly, we optimized the transfer vector backbone by stabilizing the mutation-prone inverted terminal repeats (ITRs), which are crucial for consistent, high-titer manufacturing. This reduced the ITR mutation rate after 10 serial passages in E. coli from 31.8-48.1% down to 0%. Next, promoter optimization markedly enhanced efficacy, as evidenced by increased survival in transgenic knockout mice treated with an AAV-based gene-replacement therapy. Finally, through ORF optimization, we generated truncated ORFs that further enhanced therapeutic efficacy. Overall, these findings highlight the importance of optimized vector design for consistent, high-titer AAV production and accelerated clinical translation.<\/span><\/p><p><em><strong>Min Wen Ku<\/strong> is a Commercial Strategist at VectorBuilder, where she works with academic, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical organizations to establish and develop gene delivery collaborations. Chotteau has more than 30 years of experience in mammalian cell culture including \u2265 10 years in biopharmaceutical industry (at Pharmacia Upjohn\/Biovitrum, Stockholm, nowadays Swedish Orphan Biovitrum). She joined KTH in 2008, when she was offered to lead the animal cell cultivation activities. Botulinum neurotoxin is a highly active and delicate protein molecule produced by the bacterium <em>Clostridium botulinum<\/em>. It has been used for many years in both therapeutic and aesthetic indications. Galderma\u2019s new product is a complex-free neurotoxin, presented as a ready-to-use liquid formulation. The manufacturing process, developed by Galderma, is termed PEARL\u2122 Technology. This process employs modern protein separation techniques in combination with single-use systems. The toxin is preserved in its natural conformation in liquid state throughout processing, thereby ensuring the high specific potency of the product.<\/p><p><em>Ulf has a PhD in plant lipid biochemistry focusing on protein purification from the Swedish University of Agriculture Sciences (SLU) followed by 10 years of research in the field of lipid biosynthesis in eucaryotic cells with about ten peer reviewed scientific publications. From 2008 Ulf has worked with process development for an aesthetic biological product within Q-Med AB \/ Galderma. The cost was deemed too high \u2013 and the council highlighted uncertainty regarding how long the treatment\u2019s effects would last.<\/p><p>Sweden is below the EU average when it comes to patient access to treatments for rare conditions. According to this year\u2019s WAIT survey, patients in 20 European countries have access to more orphan drugs than patients in Sweden.<\/p><p>This highlights the importance of developing new payment models for therapies targeting rare and severe diseases. Outcome-based agreements \u2013 where payment is linked to a treatment\u2019s clinical outcome \u2013 can help reduce the financial risk for payers in terms of projected spending, potential cost savings, and improved health outcomes.<\/p><p>Several countries have already implemented such agreements. Denmark, for instance, considers this payment model to be cost saving. During his presentation, Fredrik Sj\u00f6\u00f6, Head of Medical Affairs Nordic Region at CSL Behring, discusses how other European countries have approached this, why it is successful there, and how we can work together to ensure that new, innovative treatments benefit patients \u2013 also in Sweden.<\/p><p>If no one is willing to pay for gene therapies today, there will be no gene therapies tomorrow.<\/p><p><em>Fredrik Sj\u00f6\u00f6 is a seasoned medical affairs leader with a clinical background in hematology and extensive experience in the pharmaceutical industry. with hypoimmune (HIP) gene modifications entailing the depletion of HLA class I and II and overexpression of CD47 to enable allogeneic transplantation without immunosuppression. A patient with long-standing type 1 diabetes received allogeneic, gene modified, primary donor islet cells.\u00a0He did not mount any immune response against the HIP islet cells over a 26-week follow-up period. A PET-MRI at 12 weeks showed a GLP-1R signal at graft site. The patient developed stable C-peptide levels that increased in mixed meal tolerance tests.\u00a0This case confirms the immune evasive character of HIP cells in a patient and provides an optimistic outlook that immune evasion might be generalizable for more cell types, tissues and organs for allotransplantation without immunosuppression.<\/p><p><em>Per-Ola Carlsson is a professor of Medical Cell Biology at Uppsala University, Sweden. He also serves as a senior consultant in endocrinology and diabetology at Uppsala University Hospital and as director of Uppsala Diabetes Centre.<\/em><\/p><p><em>His research focus over the years has been on islet physiology, islet vascular biology, stem cell research, beta-cell replacement and early phase clinical cell therapy trials in type 1 diabetes. Shifting areas of analytical concern, such as capsid and genomic heterogeneity of the vector, demand new analytical workflows alongside process innovations to overcome these challenges and increase patient access. <br \/>The talk will introduce recent European guidelines concerning AAV quality, followed by our developments at Bielefeld University and Biofidus AG\/Midas aimed at meeting these new standards in a streamlined and cost-effective way. We demonstrate purpose-developed intact mass analysis for AAV capsid protein stoichiometry, as well as tandem mass spectrometry to investigate capsid identity and post-translational modifications from minimal sample input. In addition, next-generation sequencing reveals heterogeneities of the packaged DNA, including mispackaging and recombination, which may contribute to vector immunogenicity. Lastly, we highlight how some of these challenges could be addressed in the future by integrating our recent manufacturing advances early in the development process.<\/p><p><em>Marco Radukic has a doctorate in biotechnology and works as a research scientist at Bielefeld University, Germany.
